Who would you be listening to in 2009?
By olaaro | January 11, 2009
A very happy and blessed New year to you. I hope that you are looking forward to all that God has for you this year
This is my first post of the year and I hope that it contributes in some way to some of the things that you want to achieve in 2009.
More than ever before, I believe that there is a need for Christians to be distinguished from non-Christians. In the realm of business, career and employment, we are to be markedly different. Indeed, the scriptures describe us as the salt and the light of the world.
Jesus encouraged us to stay in the vine. Success in our business or career is dependent on staying in the vine, i.e. staying connected with Him, as there will always be people and voices speaking to us, whether through media, relatives, colleagues etc, but the important question is whom will you be listening to this year? Who will be your source of information? Who will be leading you and guiding you as to which way to go? Who will be showing you the way? Who is going to be your business companion and mentor?
God is the source of all knowledge and wisdom. I was reading the book of Amos recently and one of the things that struck me about the book was when God said that there would be a famine of the word? Can you imagine not having God speak to you?
One such person who fed on the word of God throughout His life was Moses. Most chapters in the book of Leviticus start with the words ‘And the Lord spoke to Moses’. I believe that the distinction between those who are His (bearing His name) and the rest of the world is characterised by those who hear and listen to His words.
We need to daily watch at His gates, to hear what He would say to us. Isaiah 50:4 ‘He awakens me morning by morning, He awakens my ear to listen as a disciple’. I guess this is the desire of our hearts. The challenges of this world are too great to bear them alone and without direction.
The challenge to you my reader is that as we move into 2009, we should earnestly yearn to hear His voice. Not just reading the word but wanting His specific counsel to our hearts. Let’s watch daily at His courts, asking Him questions and expecting Him to speak to us – as we would when we speak to our family or colleagues for example. We need to train our ears to hear what he has to say to us. Specific instructions every day – this is what Christian living is all about. That relationship between the Father and us, where we hear His voice. If you are not experiencing that now, the first step is to desire it, trusting that the scriptures states that whatsoever things we desire, He will give it to us. Desire that in the year 2009, you will hear God speak to you. Prayer is communication between two people- where we ask questions and we get answers. Don’t just keep on praying and praying, without expecting to hear from God.
Pray and ask God for that divinely inspired word, thought, voice and guidance. For all business and career decisions, develop the habit of communicating with Him and asking Him questions when things are unclear. Let’s learn to train our ears to listen to His voice
What we have known in the past, would be no longer sufficient to take us forward. We need a daily revelation of His word and His voice. The economic times are forcing us to rely fully on God. Listening to and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit is critical in our times.
I trust that this article has been inspiring. Until I appear again in your inbox, stay blessed
